Hot ! "Installing Android on the Nokia N810 !!!"

I’m continually frustrated with Nokia. They make truly excellent hardware but akways seem to produce the most disappointing software. The N95 & the N810 are perfect examples of this. Powerful and innovative computers let down by shoddy software.
So, when I heard that some clever hackers had ported Google’s Android OS to the N810, I leapt at the chance to reinvigorate my sadly neglected Internet Tablet..
There are various tutorials on the web, but here’s my quick & pain free howto for people running Ubuntu. This is based on the instructions from the Nitdroid Homepage and the InternetTabletTalk forums.
You will need…

• A Nokia N810 (this should also work with the N800 and the N770)
• USB and Charging cables.
• A computer running Ubuntu (or most other flavours of Linux)
• A working Internet connection.
• NERVES OF STEEL! (Not really, it’s very simple to reflash the N810 if you do mess up.)

So here’s the HOWTO:

1. Back up any files you want to keep from your N810. We’re going to be wiping it clean.
2. Remove any SD cards you’ve got from the N810.
3. Make sure the battery is fully charged.
4. Create a folder on your computer called “Nitdroid”.
5. Download the following files (or newer if available)
6. The flasher – this allows you to flash the hardware (you may need a different version if you’re running 64bit or PPC).
7. The Android filesystem
8. The Andoid OS
9. Connect your N810 to your computer via USB, switch the N810 on.
10. If you haven’t got it already, install and run gparted.
11. You need to create 3 partitions, the first must be FAT32, the third must be ext3 with a minimum size of 128MB. See the picture for an example.
12. Take a note of the device name – in this example, it’s /dev/sdb
13. We need to mount the ext3 filesystem we’ve created – go to the command line and type
    

    sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb3 /android

    Remember to change /dev/sdb3 to whatever your device is actually called.
14. We now need to go to the “/android” directory and extract the filesystem to it. At the command line, type
    

    cd /android

    Then
    

    sudo tar -xjpvf /home/$USER/Desktop/nitdroid/rootfs-nitdroid.tar.bz

    Remember to change $USER to your username – or change the whole path to where you downloaded the nitdroid files.
15. Once complete, you unmount the filesystem by typing
    

    sudo umount /android

16. We’re ready to flash! Hurrah!
17. Turn off the N810, unplug it from the power and USB cables.
18. We need to make the flashing software executable so type
    

    chmod a+x flasher-3.0-static

19. Plug the N810 into the USB cable but leave it switched off.
20. Run the flashing software (yes, with the N810 turned off) by typing
    

    sudo ./flasher-3.0-static -f -k zImage-nitdroid-n8x0 –enable-rd-mode -R

21. You will see the following message
    

    flasher v0.9.0 (Jan 19 2007)
    Suitable USB device not found, waiting

    This means that the flashing software is looking for the N810.
22. On the N810, hold down the “Switch” button (The one which looks like two overlapping squares, just under the camera). With the button held down, push the power button.
23. You’ll see some messages on your PC’s screen indicating that the device is being flashed. Let go of the buttons.
24. Wait.
25. Wait a little while longer.
26. Have a biscuit to calm your nerves.
27. It should be over and done with in less than a minute.
28. Once it’s complete, unplug the N810. Power it off, then on again. You should see this screen.
29. It takes about 5 minutes for the first boot to complete. If it takes substantially longer than that, read the troubleshooting section.
30. TADA! You now have Android on your N810.WiFi works – as do the keyboard and touchscreen. At the moment, sound, BlueTooth & GPS don’t. There are a few random crashes, and the performance leaves a little to be desired. Much like the original Maemo software!

Troubleshooting.
If it all goes wrong, here’s how to get your N810 back to the latest official firmware.

• Download the latest official firmware from http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N810.php
• Plug the N810 into the USB cable but leave it switched off.
• Run the flashing software (yes, with the N810 turned off) by typing
  

  sudo ./flasher-3.0 -F RX-44_DIABLO_5.2008.43-7_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

  Remember to replace “RX-44….” with the name of the latest software.
• You will see the following message
  

  flasher v0.9.0 (Jan 19 2007)
  Suitable USB device not found, waiting

  This means that the flashing software is looking for the N810.
• On the N810, hold down the “Switch” button (The one which looks like two overlapping squares, just under the camera). With the button held down, push the power button.
• Wait. You will have a factory fresh N810 in a matter of minutes.

First Nokia Android hack !!!

As you might know the N900 has already been taking host of Android for quite some time, also getting Froyo before many other supposed “Android Phones” :p. (Heh, All the other manufacturers are lucky Nokia’s not making Android phones as we all know they’d whip all their asses :p haha). To be fair, they would generally get 100% working versions and may have to negotiate their way around the network.
Here it is with the latest from Google’s Android Phone OS – Android 2.3 AKA Gingerbread.
This is also produced by the NITDroid team, mainly Alexey Roslyakov (DrunkDebugger). Reports suggest N900 digesting gingerbread with relative ease as WiFi, 3G, Sound and other features working. However, there are some niggles that still require addressing. N900 really lives up to its reputation as being one of if not the most hackable phone around. Shame there was no Maemo 6 phone to be playing with right now. Ah well, faith tossed up to MeeGo.

Tips on How To Update Nokia N8 Firmware (OTA)

With the Nokia N8 you will always be on top, a cool QWERTY keyboard, a 12 megapixel camera on the rear and Symbian ^3 OS on the board. I bet this is a real dream of all Nokia geeks.  Fully armed the Nokia N8 is always ready to put to shame all its competitors.
However getting hands on the Nokia N8 is not enough, you must always keep your Nokia friend updated.
If you want to find out how to update your Nokia N8 firmware over the air (OTA) then read after the jump.

A firmware update is necessary to correct minor or major bugs in your operating system, at the same time the update endows your handset with the latest features.
Now let’s get down to  business.
Head on to menu and click Settings, afterwards jump to Phone Management. Tap Device Updates to find out what firmware is currently activated on your Nokia N8. Click Options and Check For Updates to see if there is any updated firmware available.
Once you have found a new firmware, always remember to back up your data before proceeding with it. Among alternative methods to get the firmware update are  PC or Nokia Software Updater (NSU).
Reboot your Nokia N8 and there you go!

LG Optimus 7 – video review

Christmas is something that I have sadly outgrown, however the term ‘like a kid at Christmas’ was certainly an appropriate term for my reaction when the new LG Optimus 7 landed on my desk last week. The handset uses Microsoft’s brand new Windows Phone 7 OS and is packed full of features, some exclusive to Microsoft’s OS and some exclusive to LG. We have put together a short video introducing the LG Optimus 7, as well as showing off a number of the great features on the handset including Voice-to-Text and ScanSearch that are both exclusive to the LG handset.

Recently Google came along with a brand new You Tube client for a multiple of platforms including Symbian. The new version 2.4.1910 supports new devices Nokia N8, C7, C6-01 and E7 (this model has not yet gone on sale).
Now Nokia device owners can enjoy a better use of screen real estate, better steaming performance and higher quality video stream.

A quick guide to… A-GPS

GLOBAL – Location-based services are becoming more and more popular on your mobile. We’re all very used to using services on our mobile that tell us where the nearest shop or cinema is, to mobile applications like Ovi Maps that gets you from A-B using location information from your phone. However, this is just the beginning.

Over the next few years, we’re going to see more services and applications becoming location-aware. One of the areas where location information is predicted to be used more and more, is social networking. Both Twitter and FaceBook now include ways of including your location in your Tweets and your Status updates, and location-based games like FourSquare just wouldn’t work without your location. Ovi Maps now has the ability to share your location with your friends too, posting where you are directly to your wall on Facebook using the Check-in feature in Ovi Maps 3.06 currently at Beta Labs.
But for all these services to work correctly, you need to be able to calculate your precise location. It’s always been possible to calculate roughly where you are by using the nearest mobile base station, or cell site. However, while this is fairly accurate – estimating your position to the nearest 10-100 metres, in towns and cities where there are lots of base stations, as soon as you start to move in to more remote locations, where base stations are further apart the results become too vague – accuracies drop down to 1-10 miles – to be useful.

A-GPS

Assisted global positioning system (A-GPS) is a system created to enable mobile phones to quickly and more accurately establish their location. It combines a traditional GPS system where your location is calculated from the radio signals from satellites, and position information calculated from your networks’ mobile base stations.

GPS

Traditional GPS systems work well when you’re outside and ideally in the direct line-of-sight of three or more satellites. However, if you’re indoors, or surrounded by large buildings, receiving a signal will be harder, if not impossible due to the restricted view from the satellites above. Even when outdoors, the GPS system can sometimes take at least 40 seconds of data from the satellite before it can calculate your position. This isn’t good if you’re waiting for driving directions in a busy town centre.

The benefits of using A-GPS

By combining standard GPS location information with the location information from the networks’ base stations – which can penetrate into buildings and suffers less from inaccuracies through bounced signals – an A-GPS system gives much more accurate location information. Additionally, because it’s always collecting information from your local base stations, it’s also much faster.
With A-GPS, you have the speed to be able to add a location to your Tweets while you’re on the move; the accuracy to allow Ovi Maps to give you the right turn-by-turn information; and it means when you’re indoors or out you’ll always know where you are within seconds

       Produsen ponsel asal Finlandia, Nokia, telah mengaku kalah bersaing di pasar ponsel papan atas (high-end). Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (Chief Executive Nokia) mengatakan bahwa perusahaannya punya banyak pe-er karena harga sahamnya merosot dengan cepat.



Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, Kallasvuo mengatakan bahwa Nokia akan meluncurkan ponsel-ponsel pintar baru seperti N8. Ini agar mereka bisa bersaing lebih baik dari iPhone dan BlackBerry.

Kallasvuo juga mengaku sistem operasi Symbian yang digunakan di mayoritas ponsel Nokia gagal mengejar lawan-lawannya. Namun, perusahaan sedang memperbaiki faktor itu saat ini juga, begitu katanya tanpa mengungkap detail apa pun.

Samsung announces “Super PLS LCD displays”, better and cheaper

If smartphone wars were not enough, it seems like display wars are heating up. There are AMOLED, Super AMOLED, LCD, Retina, and now Super PLS LCD displays. The discussion about which one is better depends on who you ask but if you look at specs and price to produce, Samsung’s Super PLS LCD display wins hands down!

The company has recently announced that it has invented a technology called “Super PLS” or “Plane-to-Line-Switching” for LCD displays. Super PLS has an improvement of almost 100% when it comes to viewing angles and is 10% brighter than AMOLED displays. The real kicker here is that Super PLS technology supports up to WXGA resolution which will likely be 1280 x 800 or 1366 x 768 pixels (compared to 960×640 on a iPhone4 Retina display). The screens are also 15% cheaper to produce which will drive costs down and hopefully make phones even cheaper.
Mass production of the displays will begin early next year and will be implemented on all future smartphones by Samsung. The display found on the Wave II will not be a Super PLS LCD which is a bit disappointing but still the Super Clear LCD display is amazing on that device.
